Archivist Notes

Musa Al-Barash, 36 years old, from Gaza city was general manager of the local privately owned Namaa Radio. He was killed by an Israeli airstrike in Jabalia, north of Gaza City, at 5:30 a.m. on November 12, 2023.He died along with his father, brother Yacoup, and an uncle, according to a report by Beirut-based press freedom group SKeyes, a post by Namaa Club, a local sports group run by the Al-Borsh family, and his brother Issa Al-Borsh, who spoke to CPJ.

Issa Al-Borsh, the financial director of Namaa Radio, told CPJ that "Israeli missiles hit us at 5:30 a.m., killing Moussa, our father, and our uncle instantly." Their brother, Yacoup, was critically injured and died the next day, Issa Al-Borsh said. Issa Al-Borsh added that other family members were also injured in the strike, which hit their six-story building.

CPJ emailed the Israel Defense Forces’ North America Media Desk in late September 2024, asking for comment on the killing of Moussa Al-Borsh. In an exchange that followed, the IDF asked CPJ for the journalists’ IDs and "relevant coordinates," which CPJ explained it could not provide due to research limitations. The IDF then said it could not fully address CPJ’s inquiry due to a lack of "sufficient details." The IDF said it takes "all operationally feasible measures" to prevent harm to journalists and other civilians, asserting that "many" on CPJ’s list were Hamas members and therefore lawful targets, but did not name the journalists or provide evidence they were Hamas fighters.
