Killed while pregnant along with her husband Dr. Amjad Al-Shaer—medical director of Al-Shifa Hospital— and their children Hasan, Izz-ed-Din, Mira, and Amir, in an Israeli airstrike on their apartment in Tal al-Hawa, Gaza City. Walaa's fetus was ejected from the womb.
Walaa started her career at Al-Risala newspaper, then moving to the government-run Al-Rai Radio, before joining the Media Department at the Ministry of Justice. She continued collaborating with local media outlets in the Gaza Strip.
Her last post on her personal Facebook page, one day before her murder, read: "All we have as consolation [for those who will mourn us] is to leave them with beautiful pictures and a pure heart to remember us by".
